Changing Your Benefits After Open Enrollment – Qualifying Life Events
Benefits cannot be changed outside of Open Enrollment, unless an employee has a Qualifying Life Event (QLE). A QLE is a major life change. Common examples of QLEs include, but are not limited to:
- Marriage
- New dependent (birth, adoption, placement for adoption)*
- Child loses eligibility
- You, your spouse, or child becomes covered under other employer plan
- You, your spouse, or child loses coverage under another plan
- Election to terminate plan during spouse’s Open Enrollment
- Medicare, Medicaid, or CHIP coverage change
- Divorce, annulment
- Deceased spouse or child under 26
Please note that not all plans may change during a QLE and there may be more events that are considered QLEs that are not featured in the above list.
*When adding dependents during a QLE, you must submit dependent verification.
You have 30 days from the date of the change to complete your Life Event Change paperwork through your RetaTrust.org account. To begin the streamlined, electronic process, log in to your account, and click on the “Submit Life Event” button under “Quick Links.” You may be asked to provide supporting documents in order to complete the process.
